Reconstructing a major transportation corridor in the heart of a community is no small task — especially when it spans 1.2 miles and touches businesses, churches, schools, and neighborhoods. For the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the challenge was clear: upgrade aging infrastructure along Wisconsin 35 while keeping life moving for residents and traffic.
MSA’s design team crafted a four-stage construction plan utilizing a short detour to minimize disruption and maintain safe pedestrian access throughout the project. Special attention was given to truck turning movements and customer convenience for local businesses and convenience stores. Collaboration was key; the team worked closely with stakeholders including St. Anne’s Catholic Church and School, the post office, and the Apple River Family Campground to ensure their needs were met.

Adding complexity, the project coincided with a separate MSA-led bridge rehabilitation effort over the Apple River.
The result? A revitalized corridor that improves traffic flow, enhances pedestrian safety, and connects the community with a new multiuse path — creating a safer, more accessible route for cyclists and walkers along STH 35.
