This year’s honorees for the Metal Architecture Design Awards were recently announced, with the Sarasota County Household Hazardous Waste Facility selected as the Metal Building Systems/Pre-Engineered Metal Building Systems category winner.
Metal Architecture Design Awards recognize projects that exemplify the unique qualities and possibilities of utilizing metal for community infrastructure. They commemorate metal applications that meet both performance and aesthetic achievements — and that demonstrate how metal can adapt to the unique needs of the built environment. 12 projects were selected from across the nation to receive awards in 2026, with projects representing the healthcare, education, civil, commercial, industrial, and residential sectors.
The Sarasota County Household Hazardous Waste Facility is a 13,528-square-foot prefabricated steel frame design, with insulated metal wall and roofing panels. Located in Venice, Florida, the facility features a drive-through drop-off area in which to collect residential hazardous waste while optimizing traffic and air flow.
MSA team members from the former ME3 Consulting Engineers served as a subconsultant to Seibert Architects, P.A., and provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) design services for the facility’s office space, break rooms, restrooms, and hazardous waste processing areas. The scope included general lighting design, ventilation, safety upgrades, and power design for a lift station and grinder pump system. The MSA team also designed water, electrical, and fire alarm connections for the hazardous waste vault, along with a lightning protection and grounding system engineered to protect the facility and its equipment in Florida’s challenging climate.
“We are honored to receive this recognition for a project that restores a critical community service and strengthens Sarasota County’s ability to serve its residents for years to come,” remarked Bryan Zapf, PE, principal project manager at MSA. “Sarasota County has been a valued client and partner for many years, and we take tremendous pride in supporting facilities that directly impact public safety, environmental stewardship, and quality of life. This award reflects the collaboration, trust, and commitment shared by Sarasota County, Seibert Architects, our other project partners, and the entire MSA team.”
