MSA is pleased to welcome James Muetzel to the firm’s Des Moines, Iowa, office—serving as senior project manager for the company’s Bridge Team and broader Transportation Program.
Muetzel’s hire recognizes a growing multi-state transportation practice at MSA and the firm looks forward to leveraging his expertise toward the expansion of bridge and infrastructure projects.
Jim brings over 31 years of professional experience to his new role, with the 11 most recent at the Iowa Department of Transportation in Atlantic, Iowa. There, he served as transportation engineering specialist and Council Bluffs interstate system improvement coordinator, with responsibilities including project plan development, improvement and preservation programming, engineering consulting and accountability towards reconstruction of a major interstate corridor.
Muetzel has fulfilled a variety of other project management, principal, structural, design and transportation engineering roles as well, lending his expertise toward many multi-disciplinary civil and infrastructure projects.

Muetzel holds bachelor’s degrees in civil engineering from Iowa State University as well as in industrial technology from the University of Northern Iowa. He is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Iowa and Nebraska, and a member of the Iowa Engineering Society, the National Society of Professional Engineers and the American Consulting Engineers Council.
