MSA was selected to address the safety and operational deficiencies of the STH 82 interchange with IH 90/94 in Mauston with a total reconstruct of the interchange. This interchange serves as Mauston’s only interstate access point.
The existing vertical clearance under the STH 82 bridges was insufficient, and in particular, the eastbound bridge had been hit repeatedly. The interchange ramps also had insufficient lengths compared with current standards, and along with the ramp deficiencies, contributed to traffic backups onto the interstate as well as safety issues. The STH 82 interchange accommodates a large amount of traffic, and with current and upcoming development, the ramps and STH 82 in this area were becoming increasingly strained by traffic volume.
The project included replacement of the deficient interchange bridges, increasing the vertical clearance under the STH 82 bridges, improving the ramps to current geometric safety standards, and converting the ramp terminals to single-lane roundabouts. In addition to the mainline IH 90/94 work, STH 82 was reconstructed with new concrete pavement along this developed transitional highway, including new lane configurations to improve traffic flow, storm sewer, and curb ramps, including an adjacent multiuse path. In addition to the two bridges over STH 82, the project involved two bridges carrying IH 90/94 over the Lemonweir River and two bridges carrying IH 90/94 over Sherman Street/CTH G. MSA worked closely with the WisDOT Central Office Bridge Unit, who designed and provided plans for the one rehabilitation and five bridge replacements.
Construction on the entire interchange was completed over the course of multiple years. IH 90/94 remained open to traffic at all times using temporary roadways, temporary bridges and several short-term, off-peak lane closure periods. The STH 82 work was completed under traffic using lane closures and traffic crossovers.
