Wastewater Treatment Plant

Client: City of Elk River
Location: Elk River, MN

Elk River's wastewater treatment plant accommodates growth while also meeting strict discharge limits.

Elk River's wastewater treatment plant accommodates growth while also meeting strict discharge limits.

The City of Elk River's existing wastewater treatment technology could not keep up with the level of growth occuring within the community. In response, the City engaged MSA Professional Services to prepare a concept plan and facility plan to evaluate potential upgrade solutions. MSA designed a new wastewater treatment plant that caters specifically to the City's needs and the plant operators' preferences, while also meeting the government's strict discharge limits.

As part of this project, our team worked with the City of Elk River to:
  • Increase the plant's treatment capacity from .78 MGD to 3 MGD at the existing, 3.5-acre site
  • Achieve the operators' desires to use a fixed-film process, which required including a Trickling Filter/Solid Contact process in the plant design
  • Provide a cost-effective solution to meeting the strict discharge standards for mercury, phosphorus and mass loadings
  • Improve treatment processes with technology the operators are familiar with and comfortable using
  • Conduct the upgrade process in phases to lessen the City's financial burden
