MSA worked with the City, County, and DOT to design a safe, aesthetically pleasing bridge.

The failing Sawyer Street Bridge in the City of Rice Lake needed to be replaced. MSA worked with the City, County, and DOT to replace the bridge and overcome numerous challenges, including:
·         A fast-tracked schedule
·         Three separate utilities with asbestos insulation suspended from the structure
·         High voltage transmission lines crossed over and adjacent to the project
·         Limited space for the replacement of the bridge and utilities

The replacement bridge incorporates a concrete-barrier-separated recreational trail into the bridge approaches to accommodate the significant tourist and recreational use in the area. The bridge includes aesthetic architectural surface treatment, decorative railings, and decorative light bases and masts installed to provide lighting for both boat traffic and pedestrians.

MSA worked with Rice Lake Utilities to directionally drill the water and sewer infrastructure under the lake, out of the way of the bridge. The bridge features a Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) wall and a decorative barrier that separates the multi-use trail from the roadway. All of these features reduced the overall footprint of the project and prevented impacts to adjoining parkland and to the lake. MSA also provided coordination during the real estate acquisition process to ensure a timely completion of the right-of-way purchase.

The project was nominated for the WisDOT’s 2013 Best Structure Design Award.
