Three Lakes' new public works building features numerous sustainable features.

The Town of Three Lakes wanted to build a new public works facility to house their maintenance shop and vehicles for less than $1.0 million. The new pre-engineered steel building includes sustainable features to reduce energy use and provide social, economic and environmental benefits for the community, including:
  • 3 Energy Recovery Units (ERUs) to lower the annual heating costs and save energy
  • In-floor heat in the Maintenance Shop
  • Natural light in the garage and shop so electrical lighting is not required during the day
  • Motion sensors for the lighting in the office area and parts room to reduce energy consumption when the rooms are not in use
  • Dual level lights that allow control of banks of light to reduce energy consumption
  • R29 Insulation for the roof and walls to reduce energy use and cut down on heat loss

The Energy Recovery Units, with an additional cost to the project of about $20,000, have a 3-5 year payback. They provide air-to-air heat exchange. When there is vehicle exhaust inside the garage, NO2 and CO2 sensors automatically turn on the Make-Up Air Units and the Energy Recovery Units to exhaust the vehicle fumes and at the same time, bring fresh air back into the building.
