Newport needed to mitigate the flooding hazard near its public works building. MSA designed and constructed numerous drainage improvements.

In October 2005, a storm that produced six inches of rain in a seven-hour period caused significant damage to the slopes of a ravine channel between the City of Newport’s public works building and the outfall at the bottom of an adjacent channel. The washout carried several thousand cubic yards of sediment 2,000 feet through the ravine channel and flooded an adjacent residential area.

MSA worked with the City to design a solution that mitigated the flooding hazard and reduced the rate of stormwater discharge from the site. Site improvements included:
  • Five stormwater storage areas with the ability to impound more than 11 acre-feet of runoff from a watershed of 210 acres
  • Stabilization of a 2,400-foot ravine channel
  • More than 5,000 feet of storm sewer pipes
  • Street reconstruction to improve the drainage characteristics of a residential area
