MSA replaced this roadway pavement using sustainable techniques that saved the Park District time and money.

MSA used a sustainable design in repaving the existing pavement at Kaufman Lake called full depth reclamation. This design used the existing paving, sub-base and sub-grade. The existing materials were pulverized and tilled with a 9% cement mix and water into existing material. The material was then re-graded and compacted. Finally, the surface was paved with HMA binder over the improved sub-base.

Because the Park District did not want to close the park for very long and desired a more economic method of repaving, the use of full-depth reclamation made it possible to repave the entire park in 10 days—a project that would normally take about six weeks to complete via conventional methods. MSA’s innovative method also saved approximately $90,000 in repaving costs.
