CTH O project requires an explosive solution

CTH O project requires an explosive solution

MSA was hired by Juneau County and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to address concerns about steep grades and sharp curves for a 1.5 mile stretch of CTH O near Elroy, Wisconsin. Because the stretch runs through an old quarry, it required the moving of a five- to six-foot cap of limestone over sandstone. After much consideration, workers determined that the most cost effective solution was to use controlled blasting to clear the rock, as it was too heavy a job for a standard dozer ripper.

Holes were drilled about 10 to 12 feet deep in a designated grid pattern, and then the explosives were packed and detonated. This pattern will be repeated until the roadway is clear enough for final grading.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation Local Roads Improvement Program funds are helping to pay for the $1.3 million project that will be completed in September 2013.
