Alternative Wastewater Systems Design Guidance

Client: Iowa Department of Natural Resources
Location: Iowa Department of Natural Resources, IA

As part of this project, MSA designed the above spectrum of treatment technologies to illustrate their varying levels of complexity.

As part of this project, MSA designed the above spectrum of treatment technologies to illustrate their varying levels of complexity.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) design code for wastewater treatment was outdated, and limited the application of more modern wastewater treatment technologies for small, rural communities. MSA partnered with the IDNR to create design guidance documents for five new, low-cost, easy-to-implement, small community wastewater treatment options.

Our team prepared design manuals for the following treatment alternatives:
  • Recirculating Sand Filters
  • Constructed Wetlands
  • Mound Dispersal Systems
  • Drip Irrigation
  • Alternative Collection Systems
The American Council of Engineering Companies of Iowa awarded MSA the Grand Conceptor Award in 2008 – the organization’s highest honor. The project went on to receive national recognition as well.
