Why I love Des Moines

Welcome to the capital city of Iowa...Des Moines! Des Moines and its metro area is home to approximately 569,000 residents. A conglomeration of big city bustle and small town atmosphere, makes Des Moines stand out as one of the most popular cities to live in the Midwest. MSA has been in the area since 2003, and nine employees currently call the metro home.

The following are eight reasons I love living and working in Des Moines:

  1. Des Moines is home to many semi-pro sports teams such as the Iowa Wild hockey team, the Iowa Cubs baseball team, the Iowa Barnstormers arena football team and the Iowa Energy basketball team. These events are great fun and affordable for all.
  2. The area continues to grow and attract young professionals because of the expanding employment opportunities. The metro has been top ranked by Market Watch, Forbes, and others for being business, college graduate, and entrepreneur-friendly.
  3. The East Village is a vibrant and eclectic district, with many of the finest shopping, dining, nightlife and commerce in Iowa. It is located at the foot of the State Capitol.
  4. People here are proud to shop local. Want to find a cool T-shirt check out RAYGUN in the East Village or get some fresh produce on a Saturday morning at one of the best farmers’ markets in the Midwest.
  5. Home to one of the finest institutions of higher learning in the Midwest, Drake University, famous for the Drake Relays which brings in athletes ranging from high school to Olympic medalists representing many nationalities.  It is regarded as one of the top track and field events in the United States.
  6. Iowa is great for the outdoor minded individual. REI recently opened in West Des Moines and there are more than 25 well-manicured parks, more than 50 miles of biking/walking trails and a 10-acre fenced dog park. You know that people take the outdoors serious when there’s an annual bike ride across the state (RAGBRAI).
  7. Award-winning public schools (according to the National School Board Association) and low cost of living compared to other Midwest cities. Des Moines and its metro area annually ranks as one of the top areas to raise a family.
  8. I also really appreciate the short commutes, safe and friendly neighborhoods and relative close proximity to all parts of Iowa and other metros like the Twin Cities (thre hours north) and Kansas City (three hours south).
