Complete Streets 101

There’s a new way that engineers are designing streets: complete streets. Complete streets move beyond single use roadways that only accommodate motor vehicles and open them up to multiple modes of transportation. Sidewalks, bike lanes, bus lanes and pedestrian islands are just some of the many ways that transportation engineers can make roads safer for cars, buses, bikes and pedestrians.

In the Upper Midwest, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin have adopted some form of Complete Streets legislation for state-funded roadway projects.

The slideshow below highlights some of the ways MSA’s transportation engineers are embracing the Complete Streets philosophy. Click here to view the photos on flickr.
