Applications for Iowa recreational trail funding due July 1

When beautiful weather beckons, Iowa residents look forward to walking and biking on scenic recreational trails. Now communities can seek funds through the Iowa State Recreational Trails (SRT) Program to improve new or existing trails – both on- and off-street routes.

Applications for the Iowa Department of Transportation program are due July 1. Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad is expected to sign the bill approving the funds in June 2014.

Eligible project costs include the following:
  • Land acquisition for trails
  • Trail construction or rehabilitation
  • Associated roadway intersection and traffic signalization improvements
  • Information centers, restrooms, interpretive signage
  • Design engineering, construction administration
  • Signage, fencing, landscaping
State agencies, counties, cities and non-profits are eligible to apply. A 25% local match will be required. Projects must be part of a local, regional or statewide plan.

The Iowa DOT also plans to allocate $1 million of the SRT funds for refurbishing existing trail bridges that have documented historical and architectural significance – a maximum of $500,000 will be awarded per project. Applications for these historical projects must include at least a dollar-for-dollar match (50%) from funds not awarded by the state. Applications for refurbishment of a historical bridge must also include documentation that the bridge is either already listed on the National Register of Historic Places or is eligible to be listed.
