Best Cities for STEM Professionals

As we stated in our previous blog, STEM professionals are in high demand across the country. A recent report by WalletHub unveiled the best cities for STEM professionals.
WalletHub analysts compared the 100 largest metropolitan statistical areas, across 16 key metrics. The survey collected data ranging from per-capita job openings for STEM graduates to annual median wage growth for STEM jobs to the projected demand for STEM workers in 2020.
We’re happy to report that three of our offices rank in the top 12: Minneapolis/St. Paul is No. 5 in the country, Madison is No. 7 and Des Moines is No. 12.
Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota
Minneapolis also ranked fourth in Highest Mathematics Performance (4th and 8th Grade Math Test Scores).
“I couldn’t think of a better place to call home than the Twin Cities with its rich culture, heritage and people, making it a better environment to raise kids for all of us. I’m also impressed with its dining options, award-winning theater, nationally ranked parks and recreation activities and our four major professional sports teams. We are the chosen venue for the 2018 Super Bowl – how cool is that?” – Lalith Galagedera, PE, MSCE, M.PCI
Madison, Wisconsin
Madison ranked fifth in Highest Quality of Engineering Universities
“Madison is an incredible place to live, work and play. Madison capitalizes on its unique geography, with the heart of the city on an isthmus between two of the four local lakes, and it is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the country. It is also the quintessential college town and a vibrant cultural hub of art, music and good food.” – Sarah McDonald, ASLA, PLA
Des Moines, Iowa
Des Moines was second in Highest Annual Median Wage Growth for STEM Workers.
“The Des Moines metro is on a roll and a great place to kick start your career! Living large and having fun in Des Moines also won’t leave you eating ramen between paychecks!” – Chris Janson, AICP
“Des Moines is nationally recognized for being family-friendly, a great place for young professionals, and a great city for businesses and careers. With hundreds of miles of trails, cultural and art festivals, downtown farmers’ market, restaurants and breweries, it’s no wonder professionals are finding Des Moines a great place to live and work.” – Nichole Sungren, PE
