How Infrastructure is Affected by Climate

Extreme climatic conditions and ever-changing weather patterns have been affecting our life on earth in more than one way. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), climate change can lead to operational disruptions and the deterioration of public assets. This is important to note, since transportation infrastructure forms the backbone of any economy.
Rob Cowin, director of government affairs for the Climate and Energy Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said recently that cities are grappling with the expensive and dangerous effects of climatic changes on a regular basis. As a result, he’s advocating for more federal investments in infrastructure to make communities “more resilient to climate impacts.”
Last year in Colorado, heavy rains caused bridges to collapse, roads to fail and homes to be swept away. Civil engineering professors at the University of Colorado - Denver suggest using scour control methods to reduce bridge washouts and adding fiber, nano-particles or polymeric admixtures to roads to strengthen them.
Until transportation infrastructure is built more sturdily and in safer locations, we are wasting money, according to Peter Rogoff of the DOT.  “Investing in resilient infrastructure is transportation’s most significant challenge this century,” Rogoff said.
