Construction Market on the Rebound

Construction Market on the Rebound

The Great Recession affected every industry, but construction and engineering were hit particularly hard. An article in Civil Engineering noted that one million workers lost their jobs during the economic downturn.

In fact, the declining demand in construction, which also hurt the manufacturing industry sectors that produced building products, was known as the “tool belt recession.” The Center for American Progress reported that the unemployment rate for experienced construction workers in 2010 was a whopping 24.7 percent.

Fortunately, we appear to be rebounding and resuming growth across the industry. Management consulting firm FMI Corporation said that construction spending is outpacing gross domestic product growth and will continue to do so.

In addition, the Associated General Contractors of America just released a report that construction employment increased in 236 out of 339 metro areas between September 2013 and September 2014.

At MSA, we’ve experienced this rebound from two different angles. On the one hand, our private and municipal clients are pursuing more infrastructure and building improvement projects, resulting in more opportunities for MSA to provide construction management, architectural design and civil engineering services – that’s great news for us!

On the other hand, with this influx in projects comes increased pressure to find and recruit high-quality employees –other A/E/C firms are experiencing that same pressure, so competition for talent is fierce.

As an ENR top 500 Design Firm, MSA strives to make an impact on the way communities function and their ability to accommodate growth.  Above all else, MSA is a team – a team of professionals who are truly dedicated to improving the Midwest.

With 300 employees strong and growing, MSA is an employee-owned, multi-disciplined firm with locations throughout Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.  Are you interested in joining MSA’s team of professionals?  Check our careers page for current openings or contact Craig Fields for more information.
