Interns Bring Enthusiasm to MSA’s Offices

MSA’s summer internship program benefits everyone—from our students to the end client. Our interns, typically college students, seek on-the-job training and relationships with more experienced professionals. The full-time staff enjoy sharing their knowledge and learning what’s being taught on college campuses. There’s always something new to discover, no matter how experienced.

MSA had 13 interns this summer based in offices throughout Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. They’re assisting staff with transportation, surveying, municipal engineering, and information technology. Here’s a glimpse at what they’ve experienced during their time with MSA…

Emma Beachy
Emma Beachy, an engineering intern in the Baraboo, Wisconsin office, said, “Working at MSA has been a great experience for me. I love the variety of projects I work on; every day is different and I learn something new. I’ve spent time out in the field, worked with AutoCAD, and have seen several projects from start to finish. While so much new information can be challenging, the people I work with are always friendly and willing to answer questions. MSA is a wonderful work environment for interns looking to try new things and really contribute to projects.”
Jenny McAffee
For Jenny McAffee, working as an engineering intern at MSA’s Dubuque office has given her a well-rounded experience.
“In a short amount of time, my projects have ranged from water studies to road construction and stormwater projects,” she said. “All the knowledge I have gained so far will help me in my future career. I was surprised to find out how much MSA is involved in improving our surrounding communities and I am proud to say that I am a part of it.”
Bryce Statz
Bryce Statz returned for his second summer at MSA’s Madison office. Last summer he was a survey intern and this summer he’s working in construction management.
“As a civil engineering student, I am lucky to get hands-on experience with construction. Not only do I get to view the designs of talented engineers, but I also get to understand how these designs are actually built. I hope to incorporate the things I’ve learned into my own designs when I finish school and enter the job market. Thanks to everyone at MSA for making the past two summers fun and educational,” he said.
Sara Watry
Sara Watry has worked as an engineering intern at the Beaver Dam, Wisconsin office for the past two summers and throughout the school year.
“I spent a lot of my summer doing municipal construction inspection, which has helped me understand how to approach design in the office and learn how to communicate more effectively with clients. I come to work and learn something new every day,” she said.  “I could not ask for a better group of engineers to help and guide me throughout this internship. I love that MSA has such a friendly work environment and is very well-rounded, covering many different aspects of civil engineering. I am grateful to be able to have this experience and would strongly recommend MSA to future interns/co-ops.”
MSA wishes our interns the best of luck as they get set to return to college in the next few weeks.

Promoting STEM
MSA’s involvement with students begins in elementary school. We have a team of professionals who offer age-appropriate programs regarding STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers. In addition, MSA offers scholarships to agricultural, civil, and environmental engineering students. Earlier this year, seven students attending universities throughout the Upper Midwest were each awarded $1,000 scholarships.
