Project of the Month: Improving WIS 26

Wisconsin Highway 26 (WIS 26) is a major collector in south-central Wisconsin running from Janesville to Watertown. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has been improving the roadway from a two lane highway to a limited access highway that will bypass a number of the communities it currently goes through. This expressway conversion will improve travel time and reduce congestion.
As part of the larger project, WisDOT selected MSA to improve three intersections near the City of Janesville. MSA provided a detailed Intersection Control Evaluation, comparing roundabouts, signals, and stop control at the intersections. Through the study, one stop controlled intersection, one signal controlled intersection and two roundabouts (ramp terminals) were selected as the final design alternative.
MSA was then chosen by WisDOT to complete design plans for each of the three intersections. MSA reviewed utility and right-of-way impacts, prepared storm sewer plans, horizontal and vertical design, monotube traffic signal plans, signing, pavement marking, and interchange and roundabout plans for the three locations.
The new intersections are built and helping move over 20,000 vehicles per day along WIS 26 in a safe and efficient manner.
