Tom Fitzwilliams, a wastewater team leader in MSA Professional Services’ Baraboo, Wis., office, accepted the prestigious Gascoigne Wastewater Treatment Plant Operational Improvement Medal from the Water Environment Federation (WEF) on Monday, Oct. 2 at the annual Water Environment Federation’s Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC) in Chicago.
The medal is awarded to the author(s) of an article that presents the solution of an important and complicated operational problem within a full-scale, operating wastewater treatment plant that is appropriately staffed.
Fitzwilliams and his co-authors, MSA’s Matt Castillo, PE, and Microbe Detectives LLC founder Trevor Ghylin, PHD, earned the honor with their piece titled, “Activated Sludge Sleuthing,” which described how one plant used state-of-the-art DNA sequencing laboratory analysis to exactly quantify the bacterial makeup on their plant’s mixed liquor suspended solids.
“I’m very proud of the work Tom continues to do,” MSA Vice President Chuck Bongard said. “His extensive wastewater knowledge and experience has been on display for many years as he helps communities improve.”
Fitzwilliams has worked at MSA since 1994 and Castillo joined the firm in 2014.
