What is a planner? And, what do they do?

Meet Stephanie Brown, a professional planner working in MSA’s Champaign, IL office. Originally from Marion, IL, Stephanie earned her Bachelor’s in Geography from Augusta College in Rock Island, IL, and earned her Master’s Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She then took a position as the Development Planner for the City of Decatur, IL, where she focused on economic development, historic preservation, downtown revitalization and zoning/ordinance enforcement. In 2012, she relocated to join MSA as a Planner, where she assists in community planning and development. She is passionate about community engagement and enjoys creating unique facilitation plans with communities to ensure a well-informed public. She is motivated to make our communities better places to live, work and experience through collective creativity.

Throughout her career, she maintained an integral part of the Illinois State Section of the APA-IL and now serves as Director:
2008-2010 – Regional Coordinator (Region 4: De Witt, Macon, Logan, Sangamon, Menard, Cass, Morgan, Scott, Pike, Adams, Brown, & Schuyler Counties.), Disseminated information to APA members in the County and encouraged participation in ISS and APA events.
2011-2015 – Training Coordinator, Primarily coordinated all educational and training activities sponsored solely by the Section.
2016-Present – Director of the Illinois State Section, Call meetings and preside over said meetings. Represent Section Membership and Executive Committee on the Illinois Chapter Executive Committee.
What is the American Planning Association?
The American Planning Association - Illinois Chapter (APA-IL) is the premier authority on urban planning issues and professional development for Illinois' urban planners. The APA-IL is the official membership association for practicing planners in the State of Illinois. We strive to inform, educate and connect our members to resources and tools that advance the practice of planning throughout the state and pride ourselves on "Making Great Communities Happen" across Illinois.
What is the Illinois State Section of the American Planning Association Illinois Chapter?
The Illinois State Section (ISS) is a sub-section of the full Illinois Chapter of the American Planning Association. The ISS covers 95 of the 102 Illinois counties in the State of Illinois. All Illinois Chapter members living in one of these counties is automatically registered as a members of the State Section. The sister section to the ISS is the Chicago Metro Section which covers the other seven counties, primarily focused on Chicago and the surrounding metropolitan area.
