Keitel brings international resume to MSA

Dennis Keitel, PE, BCEE, brings international experience to his role as a senior project engineer for MSA in the Quad Cities office. He’s worked in Saudi Arabia and Vietnam, in addition to U.S. locations.

Keitel has more than 40 years of professional civil engineering experience in planning, design, project management and construction project management. His primary focus has been on water, stormwater, and wastewater projects.

First Mound System

In the early 1990s, Keitel designed the first community mound system in the State of Iowa for a rural subdivision (Northwood Estates) outside of Iowa City. Keitel said he would have benefited from MSA’s award-winning alternative wastewater design guidance manuals that our firm later prepared on behalf of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and other agencies.

As an engineer, Keitel said, “I enjoy improving the infrastructure and people’s lives and standard of living.” He added, “It was especially gratifying when I worked in Saudi Arabia and Vietnam.”

Vietnam and Saudi Arabia

In Vietnam, Keitel worked on some huge environmental clean-up programs, including dealing with contaminated canals running through Ho Chi Minh City. His work included the rehabilitation of the canals and installation of sanitary sewers and storm sewers. (See photo of Tan Hoa-Lo Gam Canal during construction at right.)

While in Saudi Arabia from 1979-86, Keitel worked in the Local Community Development Division for Saudi Aramco Oil Company, primarily on infrastructure development in the local Arab villages of the Eastern Province. He also managed construction of two new wastewater treatment plants to eliminate discharge of raw sewage into the Arabian Gulf. Road design in the Sandbox

From a young age, Keitel knew he wanted to become an engineer. He was the second of 11 children who grew up on a farm in DeWitt, Iowa. “I used to design roads and bridges in our sandbox when I was growing up,” he said. “I wouldn’t let my brothers destroy them.”

His interest in math and science courses continued in high school. Keitel still appreciates the efforts of a math teacher who encouraged students to explore the possibilities of computers. The students linked up to a main frame in the Quad Cities – before the Internet – and conducted research and played some games.

“I had a very forward-thinking advanced math teacher,” Keitel recalled. When he took the first year of math classes in college, they were review courses, because he had already learned the material at DeWitt Central Community High School.

Board Certified Environmental Engineer

Keitel has a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University and an MBA from the University of Iowa. He is a Board Certified Environmental Engineer (BCEE) from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists, and a licensed professional engineer in Iowa, Florida, and Wisconsin.
