The American Council of Engineering Companies of Minnesota presented an Engineering Excellence Honor Award to the City of Duluth and MSA Professional Services, Duluth, for the City’s Lift Station #8 project.

The new facility aligns with the City’s mission to protect the pristine Lake Superior.

The lift station, considered the "Grand Finale" of all the City's lift stations, is located on the City's Park Point, a popular tourist destination. The Point's single access is across the iconic, 180-foot-tall Lift Bridge located on an active shipping lane.

Lift Station #8 pumps all wastewater from the Point in a force main overtop the bridge. Project challenges included extremely high heads for a wastewater station, limited property and space in an urban setting and constant flow of wastewater to the station.

MSA kept the facility operational during construction. It now provides increased system reliability and safety for city staff.

"The new lift station replaces an unattractive and inefficient 80-year-old structure and conforms with the beauty of the historic neighborhood,” said MSA Vice President Brian Miller. “We are glad we could work with the City to design an efficient facility that has the capacity to support additional community development on Park Point.”
