Water Tower | La Porte City, IA

At MSA, our commitment to sustainability is active and ever-evolving. We know the roads we design, the stormwater solutions we implement and the developments we plan will impact future generations. As an organization whose work directly impacts our clients’ futures, social and environmental responsibility are ideas we take very seriously.

Sustainability means more to us than building environmentally conscious projects. Our understanding includes the traditional, ecological definition of “sustainability”, but we know there’s more to it than that. Our definition encompasses the idea that sustainability applies to your own personal habits in addition to the environment surrounding you. It involves developing a mindfulness of your everyday habits and a knowledge that allows you to minimize your individual "footprint" while maximizing your own personal health and well-being.

Our employees are achieving MSA’s sustainability goals on three levels:

MSA Sustainability - At HomeAt Home
MSA encourages all employees to engage in active, healthy lifestyles that promote the wellness of their families, communities and the environment. Examples include:

Alternative Commuter Challenge
The ACC reduces fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions associated with MSA employee transportation to and from work. Participants receive points for choosing commuting methods that meet this intent.

Community Involvement
Outside of work, many of us are active in organizations that significantly impact our communities. From participating in
Engineers without Borders to traveling to developing countries on service trips, we know our involvement truly makes a difference.

At the Office
One of our goals is to efficiently use the resources available in each of our 16 offices. With this goal in mind, we have taken a number of steps to create and foster sustainability within our firm, including practices that promote energy conservation, reduce waste and improve the workplace for our employees. Our internal efforts include:

MSA Ecosystem

This is our
multi-faceted strategy to improve MSA's interaction with the environment while increasing our success as an organization.

Individual Office Initiatives
In 2012, our Madison office participated as an
MPower Business ChaMpion, reducing its environmental footprint through numerous completed projects. Both our Baraboo and Duluth offices have achieved Energy Star Certification.

MSA Sustainability - At LargeAt Large
We strive to incorporate sustainable design elements in our projects whenever possible. We understand the economic and social value of “green” design and have helped our clients implement sustainable and cost effective solutions.

LEED Accredited Professionals
Many of our professionals have earned
LEED AP credentials, affirming their advanced knowledge in green building as well as expertise in particular LEED rating systems.
