Jay Richard Farm Manure Pit
Kieler, Wisconsin
CHALLENGE
Mr. Richard operates a dairy farm and milks approximately 34 cows. Mr. Richard was working with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to construct a manure pit on his farm to provide storage for winter and off spreading times in the summer from his barn cleaner. This included the storage of milk house waste that previously ran into a grass filter strip.
The NRCS had completed the site survey, soil boring, grant application and designed the initial site location for the manure pit. After award of the grant, however, due to time constraints and demands on their time, NRCS could not complete the project within Mr. Richard’s required timetable. Ms. Lynda Wilburn from the NRCS contacted MSA to assist Mr. Richard with the completion of the project in September, 2001. The completion of this project was time sensitive as Mr. Richard’s grant money required that the pit be completed by November.
SOLUTION
MSA immediately began the manure pit design utilizing the information on the project that had been compiled by the NRCS. The final design consisted of a 14,000 cubic foot concrete structure with a drive-in access ramp. The actual construction of the structure was completed in stages so that Mr. Richard could maintain access to and utilize the barn cleaner.
The design needed to follow the NRCS Code 313 for pit design and storm water control in order to remain eligible for the grant money. The construction of the manure pit was initiated immediately upon plan and permit approval from NRCS. MSA prepared bid specifications for contracted services for the construction of the manure pit and provided construction oversight during the construction. The entire project from design to completion of construction occurred in 90 days. Final construction documentation and record drawings were prepared and submitted to NRCS for Mr. Richard's grant funding. Mr. Richard received funding from County and State grants. |
